Yelp Places API vs OpenStreetMap (Nominatim and Overpass) for AI agents

Yelp Places API is Yelp's licensed API (formerly Yelp Fusion) for searching businesses and reading Yelp business details, ratings, photos and review excerpts. Free, donation-run public servers for searching OpenStreetMap data: Nominatim for geocoding and place search, Overpass for querying OSM objects.

The short answer

  • Yelp Places API: Yelp ratings, review excerpts and photos for restaurants and local services in consumer apps that display Yelp content. The terms rule out passing that content to an LLM.
  • OpenStreetMap (Nominatim and Overpass): Free, openly licensed geocoding and occasional place lookups at low volume, or a base to self-host. It is not a backend for a public app at scale.

SearchesLocal businesses listed on Yelp. Yelp says it covers "millions of businesses around the world," and the supported-locales page lists 32 countries.OpenStreetMap data worldwide: addresses, places and mapped POIs.
ReturnsJSON over REST at https://api.yelp.com/v3. Results include name, address, phone, Yelp rating, price level, review count, coordinates, categories, image and Yelp URL. Photos and review excerpts depend on the plan.Nominatim returns xml, json, jsonv2 (the default), geojson or geocodejson. Before the first callA Yelp developer account (a business email is required for the trial) and a private API key. Paid plans need a credit card on file.No account or key. Nominatim requires a valid User-Agent or Referer that identifies your app, and visible attribution.
FreeA 30-day trial with up to 5,000 API calls, for evaluation only, not commercial use. There is no permanent free tier.Free within strict limits. Nominatim allows an absolute maximum of 1 request per second. Overpass asks users to stay at or below roughly 10,000 requests and 1 GB a day.

Acting on a resultResults include the business phone number and its Yelp page URL. There is no way to message a business through the Places API.Phone or website appear only when mappers tagged them in OSM, through Nominatim's extratags. There is no messaging.
Limits on keeping or showing resultsNo caching or storing of Yelp Content for more than 24 hours. No building your own business-listing database from it. Display Requirements apply, and Yelp can require removal of content within 24 hours.Data is ODbL (share-alike), and you must credit OpenStreetMap and its contributors. Nominatim requires results to be cached for bulk jobs. It bans systematic queries, downloading all POIs in an area, autocomplete, and reselling results.
AI in its termsVery restrictive. Section 9 bans training or fine-tuning generative AI models on Yelp Content. Section 9.4 bans submitting or ingesting any Yelp Content into any Generative AI Model, for example in prompts to ChatGPT. Yelp sells a separate Yelp AI API for conversational use at $25 per 1,000 calls.Nominatim's policy has a "Usage in LLMs" section. LLMs may only suggest the service if they prominently point to the usage policy. The public API must not be built into or offered through no-code, low-code or vibe-coding platforms as a generic place-search service.
